  4. Acis and Galatea at the Opera Atalier is a unique and engaging experience. The talent of those on stage was unmatched, from the singing and dancing to the expressiveness of the dialogue. I haven’t personally seen any other interpretations of the script; that said, the piece is intended to be witty and self-aware and the actors certainly did a wonderful job interpreting it, especially in the first Act (the second Act is more serious, though still humorous.)

Allusions to sexual desire (stated in the language of poetry and surprisingly explicit for the era of composition) abound, and the actors chose to lean into this aspect to the delight of the audience. The orchestral backing is very refined, but the many themes in the first Act were more romantic and diverse than I’ve come to expect from Handel’s pastoral works. The aria was sublime, and the choreography of the dancers accompanying the solos of each character was very involved. Overall I’d say this is a must-see for lovers of classical pastoral music and it was a privilege to see it!
